Kashmir vs Himachal: which one suits your trip

Published 15 Oct 2026

In short

Pick Kashmir for lakes, gardens and the Gulmarg gondola, usually a flight to Srinagar and 5 to 7 days. Pick Himachal for a road trip from Delhi or Chandigarh, a wider budget range and Manali's cafe scene, in 4 to 6 days. Kashmir usually costs more per person.

Getting there

Kashmir: fly to Srinagar, with direct flights from most metros. Gulmarg is about 50 km from Srinagar, roughly 2 hours, and Pahalgam about 90 km, roughly 2.5 hours.

Himachal: Manali is about 530 km from Delhi, 12 to 14 hours on the overnight Volvo or by cab, and about 310 km from Chandigarh. Kullu-Bhuntar airport is about 50 km from Manali, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road.

Best time to go

Kashmir: April to June for gardens and mild weather, December to February for snow. July is the busiest month, with the highest hotel rates.

Himachal: October to February for snow around Manali, March to June for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Avoid July and August, the landslide season.

What it usually costs

Kashmir, 6 days and 5 nights, twin sharing, without flights: around ₹18,000 to ₹25,000 per person on a budget and ₹28,000 to ₹45,000 for comfortable stays.

Manali, 5 days and 4 nights, twin sharing, without travel from your city: around ₹8,000 to ₹13,000 per person on a budget and ₹14,000 to ₹22,000 for comfortable stays.

Dates, hotel category and group size move these most. A written quote for your dates is the only firm number.

Who each one suits

Kashmir suits families, couples and honeymoons: a houseboat night on Dal Lake, shikara rides at sunset, Gulmarg and Pahalgam's valleys.

Himachal suits friend groups and college trips: Old Manali cafes, Solang Valley, and day trips to Sissu and Atal Tunnel. A longer trip can add Kasol and the Parvati Valley.

How to decide

With 4 days and no flights, Himachal by road is the practical choice. With 5 days or more and room for a flight, Kashmir gives you more in less driving time.
