About this trip
Spiti is the trip people talk about doing for years before they actually do it. A high cold desert of ochre mountains, thousand-year-old monasteries at Key and Tabo, and villages like Kibber and Langza sitting higher than most of Europe.
The two routes in matter more than anything else here. The Shimla to Kinnaur approach gains altitude slowly and stays open most of the year. The Manali approach is shorter and far more dramatic, and it is shut for roughly half of it.
How to reach: Most groups fly or take an overnight bus to Chandigarh or Shimla, then drive in via Kinnaur. The Manali route is shorter but only open roughly June to October.
When not to go: Mid October to May, when the Manali route closes and much of the valley is cut off
Trip highlights
- Key Monastery above the Spiti river, the postcard shot of the valley
- Chandratal lake, weather and road permitting
- Hikkim, Komic and Langza, among the highest villages with road access
- Tabo monastery, over a thousand years old
- Pin Valley for the starkest landscape in the region
