Most first mountain trips from an Indian city are some version of the same plan: get out of the heat, find pine trees, sit somewhere with a view and a network bar or two. The difference between a good one and a wasted one is almost always the route, not the destination.
We plan mountain trips across Himachal, Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and the Northeast, and we will tell you honestly when a place needs more days than you have.
Where this works best
Questions people actually ask
Manali and Rishikesh. Both work on overnight travel, so you do not lose a working day getting there. Manali suits a 4 to 5 day plan, Rishikesh works as a genuine 2 to 3 day weekend.
4 to 6 days including travel for Himachal and Uttarakhand. Kashmir, Spiti and the Northeast need 6 to 8 because the internal road distances are much longer.
Late December to February is reliable for Manali, Gulmarg and Auli. March still has snow at higher points like Solang and Rohtang with easier road conditions.
