About this trip
Ladakh is the trip most Indian travellers put at the top of the list and then underestimate. The scale is genuinely different: passes above 5,000 m, Pangong stretching into Tibet, and sand dunes with camels at Hunder in the middle of a cold desert.
Altitude is the whole planning problem. Flying in saves days but lands you at 3,500 m instantly, which is exactly why the first two days have to be slow.
How to reach: Flights into Leh from Delhi are the practical option for most groups. The Manali and Srinagar road routes are spectacular and take two days each, open roughly June to September.
When not to go: November to April, when road routes close and many stays shut
Trip highlights
- Pangong Tso, and a night on its shore if permits allow
- Nubra valley, Diskit monastery and the Hunder dunes
- Khardung La, one of the highest motorable passes anywhere
- Leh old town, Shanti Stupa and Leh Palace
- Monasteries at Thiksey, Hemis and Lamayuru
