Spiti vs Ladakh: which high-altitude trip to pick

Published 15 Oct 2026

In short

Both need 7 to 9 days with time to acclimatise. Ladakh is easier to reach, with direct flights from Delhi to Leh, and has Pangong, Nubra and Khardung La. Spiti is a road-only trip through Shimla or Manali, quieter and with fewer stays. For a first high-altitude trip, Ladakh by air is the simpler one to plan.

Getting there

Ladakh: direct flights from Delhi to Leh take about 1.5 hours. The road routes via Manali or Srinagar take 2 days each and are open roughly June to September.

Spiti: there is no airport. Most groups reach Chandigarh or Shimla and drive in through Kinnaur, about 420 km over 2 days from Shimla, open most of the year. The Manali side is about 200 km, 9 to 10 hours, and open roughly June to October.

Altitude

Kaza, Spiti's main town, sits around 3,800 m, and Spiti needs about two days of acclimatisation. In Ladakh, take two full rest days in Leh after flying in before going higher to Nubra or Pangong.

Spiti has very few hospitals, which is one more reason not to rush it.

Best time to go

Ladakh: May to September. Road routes close in winter, though Leh stays reachable by air.

Spiti: mid June to early October for the full circuit. A winter trip through Shimla is possible but demanding.

What you see

Ladakh: Pangong Tso, the Nubra valley with Diskit monastery and the Hunder dunes, Khardung La, Leh old town, and the Thiksey, Hemis and Lamayuru monasteries.

Spiti: Key Monastery, Chandratal lake, the high villages of Hikkim, Komic and Langza, Tabo monastery and the Pin Valley.

What it usually costs

Ladakh, 7 days and 6 nights, twin sharing, without flights to Leh: around ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 per person on a budget and ₹38,000 to ₹55,000 for comfortable stays.

Spiti, 8 days and 7 nights, twin sharing, without travel from your city: around ₹22,000 to ₹30,000 per person on a budget and ₹32,000 to ₹45,000 for comfortable stays.
