Where to stay in Udaipur
Udaipur's stays are almost entirely about the view, lake-facing costs meaningfully more than a few streets back, and it's worth deciding upfront how much of the budget that should take.
Where each area fits
Lake Pichola waterfront

- Couples and honeymoon trips, and anyone who wants the postcard view from the room

- Heritage havelis and premium lake-view hotels

- The highest price band in the city for a comparable room a street back
Old City, near the City Palace

- Groups who want to walk to the ghats, markets and City Palace

- Boutique heritage stays, mostly smaller and independently run

- Narrow streets, limited direct vehicle access for luggage drop-off
Fatehsagar side
- Suits
- Families and mid-range groups wanting a quieter base
- Typical style
- Mid-range hotels, a short auto or cab ride from the main sights

- Less walkable to the Pichola side attractions
Outskirts and highway-adjacent properties

- Large groups, college batches and corporate offsites needing space
- Typical style
- Resorts and larger group-friendly hotels with parking and banquet space

Luxury, budget, groups and transport
Luxury and premium
Udaipur has some of the strongest luxury and heritage-luxury options in Rajasthan, mostly on or facing the lake.
Budget-smart
A short walk back from the waterfront in the Old City brings the price down noticeably for a similar heritage feel.
Groups
For groups above roughly 15 people we usually look at the outskirts properties first, since central heritage stays rarely have enough connected rooms.
Getting around
The Old City and Fatehsagar side are workable by auto for a day. Outskirts properties need the cab or Tempo Traveller already built into your itinerary.
