About this trip
Chitkul is the last inhabited village on the old India Tibet road, and it looks the part: wooden houses, the Baspa river running fast and cold, and snow peaks closing off the end of the valley.
Sangla, an hour below, is the practical base with better stays. Most groups split their nights between the two and add Kalpa on the way in or out.
How to reach: Via Shimla, then the Kinnaur road through Narkanda and Reckong Peo. The drive is long and best broken over two days, which we plan in.
