About this trip

Shimla is the most accessible hill station in North India and it shows, both in the infrastructure and the crowds. The Ridge, Mall Road and the colonial architecture are genuinely handsome, and the Kalka to Shimla toy train is one of the nicest ways to arrive anywhere in India.

For families and first-time mountain travellers it is an easy, low-effort trip. For a group chasing quiet, it is the wrong pick and Jibhi or Chitkul would serve better.

How to reach: Direct road from Delhi or Chandigarh, or the toy train from Kalka which is worth doing at least one way. We can book either.

When not to go: Peak monsoon, and the most crowded weeks of May and June

Questions people actually ask

As a standalone trip, probably not. As the first or last leg of a Himachal loop, or for the toy train and a family-friendly pace, yes.
Typically late December through February. Kufri, an hour away and higher up, holds snow more reliably than the town itself.
Yes, at least in one direction. It takes about five hours and seats sell out in peak season, so it needs booking well ahead.
