About this trip
Agra is usually a day trip and usually rushed, which is a shame because the Taj is only one of three major Mughal sites here. Agra Fort is substantial in its own right, and Fatehpur Sikri an hour away is an entire abandoned city.
The Taj is closed on Fridays, which catches out more itineraries than anything else about the city.
How to reach: The Yamuna expressway makes it three to four hours from Delhi, and the Gatimaan Express takes about 100 minutes. Commonly combined with Jaipur on a Golden Triangle circuit.
When not to go: May and June heat. Note the Taj is closed on Fridays year round.
Trip highlights
- Taj Mahal at sunrise, closed on Fridays
- Agra Fort, larger and quieter than most expect
- Fatehpur Sikri, an abandoned Mughal capital an hour away
- Mehtab Bagh across the river for a sunset view of the Taj
- Itmad-ud-Daulah, the so called baby Taj
