About this trip

Mathura is Krishna's birthplace and Vrindavan, twenty minutes away, is where the stories of his childhood are set. Between them there are hundreds of temples, from the vast ISKCON complex to tiny lanes where the bhajans do not stop.

Holi here starts a week before the rest of India and is the single biggest draw, particularly the Lathmar Holi at Barsana.

How to reach: Three to four hours by road from Delhi, or on the Delhi to Agra rail line. Often combined with Agra.

When not to go: May and June heat, and Holi week unless that is why you are going

Trip highlights

  • Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan
  • Krishna Janmabhoomi at Mathura
  • Prem Mandir, best seen lit up after dark

Questions people actually ask

Celebrations start roughly a week before the main national date, with Lathmar Holi at Barsana earlier still. Dates shift each year and accommodation books out months ahead.
Yes, Mathura is about 90 minutes from Agra, so it slots neatly into a Delhi, Agra, Mathura loop.
During Holi and major festivals, extremely. The rest of the year it is busy around the main temples and calm elsewhere.
