About this trip

Ayodhya has changed enormously in the last few years, with new infrastructure, a new airport and visitor numbers to match. For pilgrims it is one of the most significant towns in the country.

The Saryu ghats in the evening are the quietest and, for many visitors, the most memorable part of the trip.

How to reach: Rail and road from Lucknow and Varanasi, plus a new airport with growing connections. Usually combined with Varanasi or Prayagraj.

When not to go: May and June heat, and peak festival crowds if you want a quiet visit

Trip highlights

  • Ram Janmabhoomi temple complex
  • Saryu river ghats and the evening aarti
  • Hanuman Garhi, up a flight of steps in the old town
  • Kanak Bhawan and the older temples around it
  • Deepotsav in the days around Diwali

Questions people actually ask

One full day covers the main temples. A second is worth it for the Saryu ghats and the older parts of town.
Lucknow to Ayodhya to Varanasi is the natural line, and works well over five to six days.
Around Diwali for Deepotsav, and Ram Navami. Both are worth seeing but need booking far ahead.
