About this trip
Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and the ruins are spread across a boulder-strewn landscape that looks like nowhere else in India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and genuinely enormous.
The river splits it into two halves with very different characters: temples and monuments on one side, and a quieter backpacker scene on the other.
How to reach: Overnight bus or train from Bengaluru or Goa to Hosapete, then a short drive. Most groups arrive early morning.
When not to go: March to May, when it regularly crosses 40 degrees and there is very little shade
Trip highlights
- Virupaksha temple, still in daily worship
- Vittala temple and its stone chariot
- Matanga Hill for sunrise over the ruins
- Coracle rides on the Tungabhadra
- Boulder fields around Anegundi and Sanapur lake
