About this trip
Lonavala and Khandala sit on the Sahyadri escarpment between Mumbai and Pune, which is why they are the default weekend for both cities. In monsoon the cliffs run with water and the valleys fill with cloud.
It is short on sightseeing and long on views, so treat it as a place to sit somewhere with a valley in front of you rather than a place to tick off a list.
How to reach: Two hours from Mumbai and about ninety minutes from Pune, by road or on the frequent train line.
When not to go: April and May, when it is hot and the waterfalls are dry
Trip highlights
- Bhushi dam and the waterfalls in monsoon
- Tiger's Leap and Lion's Point for valley views
- Rajmachi and Lohagad forts, both easy treks
- Karla and Bhaja caves, over two thousand years old
- Pawna lake camping, just outside
