About this trip
Mahabaleshwar is the largest hill station in Maharashtra, known for strawberry farms, a long list of valley viewpoints and cooler air than anywhere within reach of Mumbai or Pune.
Panchgani next door has the Table Land, a flat volcanic plateau that is one of the largest of its kind in Asia, and makes the better base for most groups.
How to reach: Three hours from Pune and five to six from Mumbai by road. No rail station in the hills themselves.
When not to go: Peak monsoon weeks when viewpoints are fogged out for days at a time
