About this trip

Nainital is built around Naini lake, and almost everything worth doing sits within walking distance of it: boating, the Mall, the ropeway up to Snow View, and the ridge walks above the town.

It is one of the easiest hill trips from Delhi NCR, which is both its strength and its problem. Midweek it is lovely. On a long weekend in May it is bumper to bumper.

How to reach: Overnight train to Kathgodam then about 1.5 hours by road, or a direct drive from Delhi NCR. We arrange either.

When not to go: May and June long weekends, when traffic into the town is severe

Trip highlights

  • Snow View ropeway for the Himalayan skyline on a clear day

Questions people actually ask

Yes, it is one of the most practical hill weekends from Delhi NCR at seven to eight hours. Travel Friday night to get two clear days.
Travel midweek, or base in Mukteshwar or Bhimtal and visit Nainital for a day. Long weekends in May and June are the worst of it.
Yes, and it is a strong five-day plan. They are about 2.5 hours apart, so a safari leg slots in neatly.
