About this trip

Ooty is the best known hill station in South India, with tea estates, a botanical garden and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO listed line that climbs through tunnels and tea from Mettupalayam.

Coonoor, half an hour below, has most of the same scenery with a fraction of the crowds, which is why we usually base groups there.

How to reach: Six to seven hours from Bengaluru, three from Coimbatore. The toy train from Mettupalayam is worth booking one way.

When not to go: May, when it is at its most crowded, and heavy monsoon weeks
