About this trip
Pushkar is built around a small sacred lake ringed by ghats, with one of the very few Brahma temples in the world above it. It is compact, walkable and almost entirely vegetarian and alcohol free.
For most of the year it is a quiet backpacker town three hours from Jaipur. For roughly a week in November it becomes the camel fair, which is a completely different and far busier proposition.
How to reach: Three hours by road from Jaipur, usually via Ajmer. Easy to slot into a Rajasthan circuit or do as a weekend from Jaipur or Delhi.
When not to go: April to June heat, unless you are coming for the November fair
Trip highlights
- Pushkar lake and its 52 ghats
- Brahma temple, rare anywhere in India
- Savitri temple ropeway for sunrise over the valley
- The bazaar, good for textiles and leather
- Pushkar camel fair in November, if the dates line up
