About this trip
The Great Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh that floods every monsoon and dries into a flat white crust for the winter. On a full moon night it is one of the strangest and most striking landscapes in India.
Around it, Kutch is craft country: Ajrakh block printing, Rogan art and embroidery villages that are worth as much of your time as the desert itself.
How to reach: Fly or take a train to Bhuj, then about 80 km by road to the white Rann. Ahmedabad is the other common entry point.
When not to go: June to September, when the Rann floods, and peak summer heat in May
Trip highlights
- The white desert at Dhordo, best on a full moon night
- Rann Utsav tent city, November to February
- Kalo Dungar, the highest point in Kutch
- Craft villages around Bhuj for Ajrakh and Rogan work
- Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann
