About this trip
Auli is the closest India gets to a proper ski destination, with groomed slopes, a long cable car from Joshimath and Nanda Devi filling the skyline behind it.
Even without skiing, the ridge walk and the artificial lake at the top are worth the trip in winter. The drive up from Rishikesh is long, so this is not a two-day plan.
How to reach: Overnight to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then a long mountain drive to Joshimath, then cable car or road up to Auli. We break the drive sensibly.
When not to go: July to September, when the slopes are closed and roads are landslide prone
Trip highlights
- Skiing and snowboarding on the main slope, January to March
- Joshimath to Auli cable car, one of Asia's longest
- Nanda Devi and Trishul views on a clear morning
- Gurson Bugyal meadow walk
- Chenab lake as a day add-on
