About this trip
Chopta is a set of high meadows the guidebooks call the mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand, and the trailhead for Tungnath, the highest Shiva temple in the world at about 3,680 m.
The trek is short by Himalayan standards and the payoff is large: Chandrashila summit, just above the temple, gives a genuine panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Chaukhamba on a clear morning.
How to reach: Overnight to Haridwar or Rishikesh, then roughly 8 hours by road to Chopta. We usually break this at Devprayag or Srinagar.
When not to go: Peak monsoon, when the trail is slippery and views are clouded
Trip highlights

- Chandrashila summit at sunrise
- Chopta meadows and the camp stays around them
- Deoria Tal, a lake with Chaukhamba reflected in it
