About this trip

Gangtok is a clean, orderly hill capital with Kangchenjunga on the horizon, and it is the base for everything else in Sikkim. Tsomgo lake and Nathula sit a couple of hours above it.

The trip people remember is North Sikkim: Lachung, the Yumthang valley of flowers, and Gurudongmar lake at well over 5,000 m. All of it needs permits and a guide, which we arrange.

How to reach: Fly to Bagdogra or Pakyong, then four to five hours by road to Gangtok. Permits for North Sikkim and Nathula are arranged as part of the trip.

When not to go: June to September, when landslides regularly close the North Sikkim roads

Trip highlights

  • Tsomgo lake and Baba Mandir, with Nathula if permits allow
  • Yumthang valley, the valley of flowers, in spring
  • Gurudongmar lake, one of the highest lakes in the world
  • Rumtek and Pemayangtse monasteries
  • Pelling for the clearest Kangchenjunga views

Questions people actually ask

Indian nationals need permits for North Sikkim, Tsomgo and Nathula. We arrange them with the booking, and they need ID documents a few days ahead.
Yes, they are about four hours apart and the combination is a strong eight to nine day trip.
It is a very early start, a long drive and over 5,000 m of altitude, and it is occasionally closed by weather or the army. Worth it, but not casual.
